Don Juan Celis arrived to New Jersey, USA in 1989; following the American dream. In his pursuit, he met Ms. Gloria Isabel Peña in 1992, with whom he formed a wonderful family, including 3 children. By February 2001, the market saw little advancement and decided that he and his family would find better opportunity in Greenville, SC.
With the market flourishing in Greenville, general jobs were filled to maximum capacity and employment opportunities ran slim. Having found no other way to support his, then, family of 3, he turned his last 5 dollars into a bag of flour and commenced his first bakery from the kitchen of his own apartment, using a standard oven. His first clients consisting of a handful of friendly neighbors that grew to a massive clientele by knocking on doors and visiting the local Flea Market.
After 3 months of hard work, the time came for a business establishment of their own and chose to start with the very first Fresh-Made Mexican Bakery in Greenville, SC at 6300 White Horse Rd in Suite 101. Having been their first experience with any business in general, the budget was extremely tight; complete remodeling and restructuring of the location was not possible, yet. With the challenges presented, the doors to the first La Unica were opened on July 1st, 2001 with a simple oven, a blender, a table and various small utensils from home.
At the time, a name for the business was needed. After a meticulous meeting, deciding on the perfect name; as it was not only the first, but the only Fresh-Bread Mexican Bakery in Greenville, SC, It was appropriately named: La Unica. After 6 months of humble success, savings were able to expand the budget and a proper remodel and restocking of the location, along with the appropriate permits filed, allowed for the further growth and development of La Unica.
Where We're At
With the support of the community and hard, earnest labor, by 2003, the opportunity had presented itself in the form of a local grocery store owner offering her location, stock and items, for a grand total of $56,000; officially bringing La Unica into the grocery service industry. In 2005, further expansion continued with another super market opening in Taylors, SC of 4000 ft2 ; with the amazing support of the community, it grew to a spacious 12,000 ft2 store; allowing for a wider selection and spacious comfort whilst shopping. Not stopping there, their first location being a great success and another, much bigger space becoming available in the same plaza, their first location was moved to its bigger establishment.
